As I read this passage, I wonder whether I would have responded to Jesus visit more like Martha or Mary? Martha gets caught up in wanting to serve the Lord and while perhaps operating out of a good heart of wanting to bless Jesus, she lets her tasks and preparation become a distraction and it drags her focus away from what was really important. In the constantly increasing pace of our everyday lives where we are busier and busier with more tasks and more responsibilities I find it so easy to fall into the same trap as Martha where I am “distracted” from what is really important in this life, which is relationship rather than tasks and activities.
Unlike Martha, Mary chose relationship; she chose to sit at Jesus feet and to spend time with Him, listening to Him. Jesus said that she chose “what is better”. The challenge out of this passage is to reflect on what we are choosing in our life; what are we prioritizing; where do we focus our energy, efforts and time? Do we put tasks and doing things first? Or do we, like Mary, recognize that relationship must come first, and our absolute priority is our relationship with our Lord, this is “what is better”. As we do life, let us keep focus and not be distracted. Let us choose the Lord, and make relationship with Him our first priority.

Legally, we are not allowed to post photos of anyone under 18 without parental permission. Please be careful not to post a photo of your child in a group with other under-18s in our church without asking parental permission. We also ask that you seek permission from any adult in a photo you are posting online, as a matter of courtesy and ‘safe church’ mindset. This applies to photos where faces are clearly recognisable. It is important that we respect people’s privacy and allow us all to have some control over where our name and image is published. Please contact the office if you have any questions or concerns.
